Surroundings

The area east of the river IJssel is generally known as Achterhoek, famous for its scenic landscape: forests, country estates, small rivers, picturesque villages, and cozy terraces. The largest cities, Zutphen and Doetinchem, are modest by national standards with less than sixty thousand inhabitants. Also, the smallest city in the Netherlands, Bronkhorst, and the only book village in the Netherlands, Bredevoort, are located in this region.

The Achterhoek is also attractive due to its many castles. There are about seventy of them here! Most of them are still privately owned, and some can be visited. The beautiful nature is perfect for a bike ride or hiking tour. For those who prefer to follow a marked route, Achterhoek is the right place. Hundreds of kilometers of paths are equipped with route signs. There are routes of various lengths, suitable for an hour, half or full day, or even for several days of active relaxation in a row.

The area has been rightfully declared the best cycling area in the Netherlands! But the hiker can also fully indulge here. The Achterhoeker is hospitable, loves to chat, and warmly welcomes visitors. The widely used slogan "You will find your story in Achterhoek" comes to life in the region, both literally and figuratively, thanks to its traffic-free and relaxed living environment! It is a delightful and popular vacation area with a combination of small-scale charm, beautiful nature, and hospitality.
